YUMI floats on a sugar-high on addictive new single ‘Coffee’

On her just-released single Coffee, Sydney singer-songwriter YUMI cleverly compares an intoxicating crush to the energising rush of caffeine.

YUMI has released her new single Coffee, marking the first track to be lifted from her forthcoming EP Better Without You.

An indie-pop ode to its titular beverage, Coffee takes the Sydney singer-songwriter on a caffeine-induced sugar high, with the assist of stripped back guitar strums so sunny you might need to wear blinders.

Punctuated by subtle percussion, the single rightfully forefronts YUMI’s whispery vocals, as the singer likens a carefree muse to the energising and intoxicating quality of a coffee.

She’s a caffeinated hot-shot,” she sings leisurely on the chorus, “only drinks too much.” Perhaps the major drawcard of Coffee is YUMI’s masterful lyricism, which first details the addictiveness of a sugary romance  before detailing the inevitable comedown that follows.

“Heart attack destined to happen,” YUMI sings with the resignation of a coffeeholic, “someone call a doctor.” By keeping the surrounding production instrumentally sparse, YUMI prioritises her diary-like storytelling without sacrificing the blissful and airy tune that makes Coffee’s runtime fly by.

There’s a timeworn quality to the single that’s as equally irresistible as its namesake cuppa joe. YUMI’s vocals are subtly altered with the kind of fry that you might hear from a vinyl record, with the track’s outro cutting sporadically as if the stylus of said record was caught on a loop.

This vintage flair is intentional on YUMI’s part, since she “admire[s] indie guitar sounds from the 60’s and 80’s, [and] draws inspiration from 60’s girl groups,” she said in a press statement.

Fuzzy, dreamy and ultra-feminine, the quality of YUMI’s latest effort is perhaps to be expected, given that the singer has been performing since the age of just 10-years-old.

From those origins in that self-created band, YUMI has since taken to some of Sydney’s most iconic stages from Oxford Art Factory to Mary’s Underground and The Lansdowne, with no signs of slowing down.

YUMI is set to steal the spotlight at The Chippo Hotel with her official EP launch later this month, with tickets available here.

Coffee is the first preview of YUMI’s upcoming EP Better Without You, with fellow singles Desdemona and the title track set for release in the coming weeks.
