Happy Mag’s guide to the last minute Mother’s Day scramble

If you’ve left Mother’s Day to the last minute, don’t freak out. We’ve got you covered.

If seeing this headline was your first reminder that Mother’s Day is this Sunday, you’re not alone. It’s a holiday that comes around too damn fast every year, but also one you can’t miss.

It’s Thursday and Mother’s Day is Sunday. As it stands, you have less than 96 hours to get a gift or a cute mum date sorted. Here are some perfect last-minute options for groovy mamas.

Take mum on a date

Dates aren’t just for your boyfriends, girlfriends or whatevers, and there’s nothing wrong with wining and dining your mum to say thanks for all the shit you undoubtedly put her through.

The Bank Hotel in Newtown is always an option if you’re thinking Sydney’s Inner West, and they’ll be running a beef and vegetable roast for the occasion. Barangaroo House  is a little more primo but absolutely gorgeous, so if you’re really trying to impress or you’ve been forgetting to call mum on Sundays, that’s your ticket.

If you’re looking for something a little more down-to-earth, there’s never been a better time for distilleries and breweries in Sydney. Young Henrys in Newtown is our top pick if you mum loves a pint, but if she’s more the G&T type, it’s a short drive to Poor Tom’s Gin Hall.

Grab a last-minute gift

A gift is always welcome but for a real winner, you’ll want something simple that your mum will actually use.

The Soma Filter Jug not only looks good, it turns ordinary tap water into fresh, filtered water, effectively reducing unwanted contaminants like chlorine, mercury, copper, and more. The filter casing is made with sugarcane plant-based materials and filters using sustainable activated coconut shell carbon. They’re stocked nationally in Myer, so grabbing one is easy as finding your local store.

On the booze front, Down The Rabbit Hole are a South Australian winery who put together one mean Signature Gift Box. According to their Shipping info, if you order today the box should get to you by Mother’s Day if you’re in the South Australia, New South Wales, or Victoria metro.

Flowers: never a bad option

Flowers, they’re a classic for a reason. Florists around the country will be under the pump but well prepared on Mother’s Day, so if you really stuck on a last minute gift, load up Google Maps and find a florist near you. If you’re living in any sort of metropolitan area, there shouldn’t be one too far off.

Interflora is an Australian flower delivery service that caters to the procrastinator in all of us. Leading in to Mother’s Day 2019 they’re running a delivery guarantee, meaning that if you order before 5pm on Saturday May 11th, your perfect bouquet will absolutely arrive on Sunday.

Get mum an experience

While scoring your mum a voucher, appointment, or similar means you won’t physically be able to give her something on Sunday, once she’s come out the other side of the experience, you’ll be her favourite child once again.

Gaia Retreat & Spa is a resort located in Brooklet, right near Byron Bay in northern New South Wales. Founded by Olivia Newton-John and three mates in 2005, they offer some incredible retreat packages catering to every need. That said, they’re a little on the expensive side, so perhaps look into splitting this one with Dad.

If your mum is more of a goer, Adrenaline.com.au have a huge range of gift experiences on special for Mother’s Day. Starting as chilled-out as a harbour cruise during Vivid Sydney and ramping up all the way to skydiving vouchers, there’s a gift for every mum in there – no matter how rad she is.

See something live

We’d never dream of putting together an article without suggesting a few gig spots. If your mum’s into live music, hell yeah. If she isn’t too well versed, some music is the perfect way to cap off a solid day spent together doing what she loves.

Hooked On Classics, the best selling classical music release of all time, is coming to the iconic Sydney Opera House this Sunday. Over at The Tivoli in Brisbane, Dean Lewis will be performing as part of his A Place We Knew tour. Trust us, mums love Dean Lewis.

If you’re willing to bend the rules a little and see a show on Saturday instead of Sunday, The Teskey Brothers and Amy Shark are both playing in Melbourne on the 11th. There’s also a special David Bowie Tribute Night going down at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda. In Brisbane C.W Stoneking will be a great time, and Vanessa Amarossi will also be touching down in Sydney.
