Em George Performs ‘The In Between’ Live at Enmore

PRESENTED BY

Ranging from country-tinged folk to lush, indie rock epics, the sound of Sydney’s Em George is expansive. And she’s got the voice to match.

Her new single, The In Between, is similarly adventurous. While the original version develops into a noisy, alt-country rock-out, the special solo version that Em George brought to her Live at Enmore session lost none of its anthemic power.

If anything, stripping away the layers of the arrangement enhanced the potency of the lyric, allowing Em George’s mesmeric voice to weave its magic at the front of the mix.

The In Between was Mixed and Recorded by Radi Safi and Owen Penglis

Travelling light, with just her trusty acoustic guitar in tow, The In Between was completely reimagined, with insistent rhythms on the guitar forming the backdrop for George’s  powerhouse vocal performance.

Here’s how she described the meaning of The In Between:

“I wrote it last year in the middle of the first lockdown… it was that weird time in the lockdown where you didn’t really feel like you were present in the moment and The In Between just came out of all that.”

Capturing vocals and guitar at the same time with separation is a challenge. For the guitar, we went with the versatile and detailed large-diaphragm condenser: AT4050

For the vocal, we went with another AT4050 — the anniversary edition ‘Urushi’ model. Both microphones were set to the Figure 8 pattern and carefully positioned to create separation between the two sound sources.
