Alex Edwards recently dropped his rhythmically and emotionally provoking EP, Flown Frosted. Now, he opens up to us about inspirations, interests and aliens.
Emotionally raw and restless expresser, Alex Edwards has entered the creative realm again recently with his stimulating and melodically coaxed indie/alt EP, Flown Frosted, which strips inspiration from the uncles of emotionally raw musical expression, Elliot Smith, Death Cab for Cutie.
The five-track collection of songs rhythmically hypnotizes you and takes you for a moody dance. His tracks are absorbed in high-spirited melodic guitars and drums, melted with captivating potent vocals, that ever so naturally move you to reach presence in emotions. Engaging with raw, authentic lyrical depth, Alex brings your feelings to the surface.
With his next gig not till the 15th of December at The Bearded Lady in Brisbane, Alex Edwards shares the current projects he’s been working on, such as writing his newest novel as well as briefing Happy on the intertwining factors that gave Flown Frosted the incredible sound it possesses. Living around a bushland reserve, with beautiful birdlife, Alex Edwards reveals that he lives in the perfect place to rehearse and create with enough volume to not annoy the neighbours.
Get to know Alex with Happy as he discusses his writing and recording process for Flown Frosted and how it was guided by an outside force. He also sheds light on his mental illness journey, and how it’s propelled him forward.
HAPPY: Thanks for chatting with us! What are you looking forward to this week?
ALEX EDWARDS: This week I’ll continue to write my newest novel. I’m up to #4. Alex Edwards Band has a concert on 15 December at The Bearded Lady in Brisbane, but it’s quiet times until then, so I have some time to spend on my other creative outlets.
HAPPY: Tell us about your suburb, what do you love/not love about where you live?
ALEX EDWARDS: Great birdlife, great bushland reserve… and the rehearsal room seems to be bunker-like enough to not uspet the neighbours too much!
HAPPY: Tell us about your favourite experience performing live.
ALEX EDWARDS: I think I really enjoyed playing at Back Dock Arts a few months ago – it was with a particular line-up, and the energy was very present. Credit to Lucia and Pam for turning up with their skill sets that night!
HAPPY: Describe your writing and recording process.
ALEX EDWARDS: Honestly, it’s like a spiritual muse. That’s the subject of my new album (out next week) and Flown Frosted had a great deal of feeling that I felt I gathered from the sense of an “outside guidance” somewhere in the aether, for lack of a better way of putting it. No disclosure about spiritual beliefs, just the notion is pretty fancy to entertain when writing!
HAPPY: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
ALEX EDWARDS: America – to tour. Alex Edwards Band plans to in June 2023.
HAPPY: What would your ultimate day involve?
ALEX EDWARDS: Alien disclosure. Have there been enough sightings, eyewitness accounts, and government documents yet?
HAPPY: Which books or TV shows are you currently enjoying?
ALEX EDWARDS: A few weeks ago, I listened to Unacknowledged by Stephen Greer in audiobook format. It’s pretty compelling, and is about aliens. For me, aliens have got to be real!
HAPPY: What did you read last that opened your eyes and mind to a new perspective?
ALEX EDWARDS: It sounds egotistical, but I read something that I wrote – a book called As Jovia Dawns. It’s all about space, and it definitely the process of writing in a futuristic way opens your mind.
HAPPY: What’s something someone has said about your music that you’ll never forget?
ALEX EDWARDS: Someone came up to me and said that they were inspired that I had gone public with my mental illness journey. That stuck.
HAPPY: Tell us what artists and songs inspired Flown Frosted.
ALEX EDWARDS: I think Giants of Science is in my brain somewhere, along with Muse, Alexisonfire, Thrice, and originally Elliot Smith… but it’s probably just Grinspoon and The Living End on some outsider-in perspective (rather than what I think).
HAPPY: Thanks so much for your time!
ALEX EDWARDS: Thank you for yours!
