Two flavours of octave filth (the best kind) in one hand-built box
Axewerx is a small pedal outfit out of Ontario, Canada, the kind of one-builder operation where every unit is breadboarded, refined, assembled and tested by hand before it ships. Their latest, the Glass Drive, is a dual-stage octave dirt machine that crams two completely different personalities into a single enclosure.
Here’s the pitch. The right side is an octave-up harmonic distortion, all splatty, ring-modulated nastiness in the classic octave fuzz tradition, with a toggle to pull the octave out if you just want the dirt. The left side goes the other way, dropping your signal down one or two octaves for proper sub rumble. Run either channel on its own, or stack them and let an active mixer stage blend the two into something genuinely unhinged.
That’s the trick that makes the Glass Drive more than a novelty. Most octave pedals make you pick a lane. This one lets you sit a snarling octave-up lead on top of a -2 octave foundation, covering everything from Hendrix-style solo screech to doom-adjacent low end that’ll worry your speaker cones.
The supporting controls are where the flexibility lives. FILTER handles tone shaping, SMASH is your master volume (great name, no notes), and FOCUS is the sleeper hit, trimming each effect path and blending your clean signal back in. Octave effects get woolly fast, so a knob dedicated to keeping definition in the mix is a smart, player-minded inclusion. There’s a buffered input, and it runs on standard 9V centre negative power.
Build-wise, it’s assembled by hand on a custom PCB, with the power and I/O sections separated onto their own board for less noise and easier repairs. Axewerx calls it an analog pedal “with one digital chip…shhh”, presumably handling the octave-down tracking, and that’s the right call. Let us know Greg?
