A Hong Kong agency has designed a miniature vinyl record made from Oreo cookie that you can actually play on a record player.
Working alongside Oreo Hong Kong, the Dimensions Plus agency created the ‘Oreo vinyl’ to market the cookie to Chinese teenagers. The package includes a miniature turntable and four playable vinyl cookies featuring music created by local musicians.
In a post on their website, the agency explained how the thing works.
“We created an Oreo that plays music by replacing the classic embossing with grooves on the cookies’ surface that work as a vinyl record. We placed these music embossed Oreos in special Music Packs. Each cookie in the pack plays the Oreo anthem in a different musical style, bringing wonder to their ears.”
Dimension Plus used laser cutting and engraving techniques to have the cookies play the Oreo anthem in different genre styles, including jazz, electronic, classical, and Chinese pop.
The agency explained of the process:
“The data on the cookie is embossed with a mod… We wrote a program to transform the music into a pattern. After that, we make it into a laser-engraving friendly format and produce the mod for the Oreo Vinyl production.”
