Johnny Hunter Performs ‘Life’ Live at Enmore
PRESENTED BY
Johnny Hunter is one of the most powerful presences in the Sydney music scene. Post-punk and ’80s synth-wave permeates their anthemic tunes and their new single, Life, is no exception.
The track was radically reimagined for their Live at Enmore session. Usually delivered at a more frenetic tempo, this time Life took on a more contemplative atmosphere, with Nick Hutt’s booming baritone accompanied by Gerry Thompson’s lush and spacious guitar.
Despite the band numbers being cut down, the commanding presence of Johnny Hunter was evident for all to see.
Life was Mixed and Recorded by Dan Shaw and Owen Penglis
Johnny Hunter has a mighty sound — one that has earned them many plaudits. And though they were travelling light for this session, the emotional intensity of the song’s message was perfectly conveyed.
“Life is our own pursuit of happiness. It’s cliche, but living for the brand new day,” said Hutt about the new single. “It kinda made me think about changing who I was becoming and embracing a different routine and different balance.”

The Live at Enmore series is made possible with the help of our tech partner Audio-Technica. Here’s a list of the microphones that were used to capture this incredible performance:
To capture all the detail and dynamics of a supreme lead vocal, the AT4047 is ideal.
Dynamic mics are perfect for capturing all the grit and mid-range details of a guitar amp. For this task, we went with the Audio-Technica AE2300.
Coupled with dynamic, a ribbon mic has all the bottom end juice you need on an amp. The Audio-Technica AT4081 is perfect for the task.
