The ARIA Top 100 Singles Chart for 2017 has been released, summarising the highest-selling singles of last year. Sadly, Aussies didn’t fare too well in the top 100, with not a single Australian song making the top 10, while only nine made the top 100.
The ARIA Top 100 Singles Chart for 2017 has been released, and unfortunately not a single Australian track made it into the top 10, with only four making the top 50.
With Ed Sheeran taking out the top album of the year, it’s not surprising that he also dominated the top 10 singles, with four tracks making the cut alongside artists like Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore, and The Chainsmokers & Coldplay.
But, sadly, it’s not until the thirties that we see an Aussie artist crop up – Pnau’s Chameleon was the 32nd highest-selling single of 2017, earning platinum status (over 70,000 units sold). Then, down the list you’ll find Dean Lewis’ Waves at number 34, the Ryan Riback remix of Starley’s Call On Me at number 37, and Amy Shark’s Adore at number 40.
The latter half of the top 100 saw Peking Duk’s Stranger at number 78, Bliss N Eso and Gavin James’ Moments at number 81, Jessica Mauboy’s Fallin’ at number 83, Vance Joy’s Lay It On Me at number 90, Troye Sivan and Martin Garrix’s There For You at number 92, and Flume’s (ft. Kai) Never Be Like You at number 97.
After a promising year in 2016 (Flume took out number 4, and another 12 Australian songs made the top 100), the top 100 is pretty disappointing, especially considering the staggering amount of great Aussie music that came out last year.
This seemed to be reflected a little better in the album charts, with 27 homegrown records making the top 100, including albums from Paul Kelly, Angus and Julia Stone, Gang of Youths and Tash Sultana.
