Introducing Eves

With a soulful intensity and an incredible insight into the emotional turmoil that comes with love and heartache, Eves is an ascendant talent that will take your breath away. Wise beyond her mere 19 years, the folksy indie-pop laced with an edge of the female-driven alternative rock of the 90s that Hannah Karydas (aka Eves) creates, is a sound that dare we say it, challenges the pipes of Kiwi ingénue Lorde. But in her own right, Eves is a name that will soon be on everyone’s lips as she continues to forge her own unique sound and musical path.

Cairns + Brisie’s Eves and her folksy indie-pop, driven by 90s alternative rock sound, is a reason you can look forward to an exciting 2015 for indie folk singers.

The Cairns-born, now Brisbane-based Karydas has experienced a transformative journey that not many teens can say they’ve encountered. Rebranding herself as Eves during the latter half of last year, Karydas has accomplished an incredible amount in her short but prolific career.

Signing an inevitable management deal with Mucho Bravado earlier this year, Karydas has played Groovin’ The Moo, Fretfest, Woodford Folk Festival, London’s Spice of Life, and appeared as one of the three co-headliners on the recent Triple Treat Tour alongside fellow up-and-comers Jesse Davidson and Jordan Léser. And with that voice, the busy Queenslander is only going to get busier.

Citing an eclectic mix of influences like Mazzy Star, Joni Mitchell and Haim, it’s evident that Karydas has taken a leaf out of the books of the greats to create her melodic indie folk. Envisaged by Karydas herself as a song which embodies a “very orange/dirty gold flecked with a dark maroon,” Zen has already received heavy rotation on Triple J. And we’ve heard why. Structured around restrained acoustic guitar and entwined in beautifully airy vocal harmonies and intriguing instrumentation, it’s a track with an effortless beauty.

Earlier single Heavy delivers a recount of teen angst, disappointment and heartbreak through Karydas’ clear-cutlyrical storytelling laid against a propulsive, galloping folk-rockdrum beat. Despite only having released a few singles (and Scrutinize under Hannah Karydas), Eves has quickly amassed a loyal following within the international blogosphere and indie scene alike.

We’re sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of Eves, with her debut EP expected to be released very soon. We don’t doubt the rising songstress will be blowing Brissy audiences away at BIGSOUND 2014 .
