How to score 1 in 50 free recording sessions with the American Express Music Backers Fund

Normality is within reach, meaning there’s never been a better time to secure some much-needed cash to get your music back on track. That’s where the American Express Music Backers Fund comes in.

What a long, strange trip it’s been this year. Thankfully around Australia, decision-makers are dropping subtle hints that there might be a light at the end of 2020’s tunnel.

Outdoor gatherings of 500 are allowed in NSW, festivals are well and truly back on in WA, and even Victorians are leaving their homes, finally ready to jam after a quarantine-enforced hiatus.

It was back in August that we first shared the American Express Music Backers Fund, a $1 million injection into the Australian music industry. Under the fund’s numerous grants there’s room for artists, businesses, and ground-level music fans to apply. Grants will be handed out to those who’d struck harder times than most, those planning a huge new project, and those ready to fundamentally change the industry.

If you applied on that first reveal, sit back and wait for the recipients to be announced. If you didn’t, you have until November 9th, so jump on it fast. Apply right here.

If you’re a musician though, you deserve to know a little more about Studio Week before you apply.

Studio Week

Without a doubt, one of the Music Backers Fund’s sweetest offerings is Studio Week. Taking place all over the country, Studio Week will open the doors of 10 iconic recording studios to a whopping 50 artists with costs completely covered.

Each selected artist will receive a day’s worth of studio time to record a track, be paired with a producer to iron out any kinks on the day, and be provided access to a Virtual Mentoring Workshop with industry leaders.

The studios taking part in Studio Week include:

  • Forbes Street Studios (Sydney CBD, NSW)
  • Studios 301 (Alexandria, NSW)
  • Tommirock (Newcastle, NSW)
  • Head Gap Recording Studios (Preston, VIC)
  • Sing Sing Studios (South Yarra, VIC)
  • The Mill (Bass Coast Shire, VIC)
  • Airlock (Camp Mountain, QLD)
  • Studio Circuit (Burleigh Heads, QLD)
  • Mixmasters (Hawthorndene, SA)
  • Fremantle Recording Studios (Fremantle, WA)

To enter you’ll need a demo, and you’ll need to make sure you have at least one free day in the studio of your choosing on the week starting Monday December 9th.

Like the rest of the Music Backers Grant, you have until November 9th to submit your application. Get demoing!
