Sam Worthing and Zoe Saldaña will reprise their roles in the much-anticipated Avatar sequel.
The first full trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar sequel has arrived. Titled Avatar: The Way of Water, the follow-up to Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi film will hit Australian cinemas on December 15, and is set to chronicle the film’s protagonist Sully ten years after the events of the original. The trailer features stunning shots of waterborne Na’vi — including new characters in Sully’s children — and later makes way for combat scenes and aerial warfare in Pandora.
“Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family”, the film’s synopsis reads, “the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.” Reports emerged earlier this week that the film’s runtime stretches over three hours and ten minutes, some 30 minutes longer than the first movie.
The sequel’s returning cast includes actors Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña and Sigourney Weaver, who reprise their roles as Jake/Sully, Neytiri and Grace Augustine respectively. Elsewhere, the film welcomes new castmates Michelle Yeoh, Edie Falco and Kate Winslet, the last of whom starred in fellow Cameron epic Titanic in 1997. Avatar’s first film entry remains the high-grossing movie of all time, and began what’s expected to be a years-long franchise encompassing three more films.
Filming has already begun on the Avatar’s threequel, which is expected to premiere sometime in 2024. The third and fourth films, meanwhile, are projected for a theatrical release in 2026 and 2028, respectively.
