Listen to Father John Misty completely take this piss out of modern pop with three new songs

Just one month before Pure Comedy is set to be released, Father John Misty has surprised us with a new collection of tracks. It’s probably not what you’re thinking though. The three new tunes appeared on Misty’s Soundcloud last night and they are a complete piss take of modern pop.

Father John Misty satirises modern pop music with three new ‘Generic Pop Songs’ that just appeared on his Soundcloud.

The tracks, titled Generic Pop Song #3, Generic Pop Song #9 and Generic Pop Song #16, are basically satirical interpretations of garden variety pop tropes, sung, played and produced by Misty himself.

The tropes in question include the dramatic build up we constantly hear in club bangers, the flaccid earnestness we hear in piano ballads and the heartfelt “millennial whoop” (if you don’t know what that is, see here).

In April 2016, Father John Misty discussed with Rolling Stone his experience contributing to Beyoncé’s Lemonade single Hold Up.

“I went crazy,” he said. “[I] recorded a verse, melody and refrain that, unbelievably – when you consider how ridiculous my voice sounds on the demo – ended up making the record.”

A testament to his skill as both a performer and songwriter, the songs are actually pretty good. See below:
