If you’re not yet across the jangly, surfy, garage-punk sounds of Brisbane outfit Hey Baby!, you’ve been missing out. No two ways about it.
Diving into one of their songs is always a great time, so fresh off the release of their latest single Unconventional, we caught up with vocalist Kacper Majchrowski for a chat.
Fresh off the release of their incredible latest single Unconventional, we caught up with Hey Baby! frontman Kacper Majchrowski for a chat.
HAPPY: Hey How’s it going? What are you up to at the moment?
KACPER: Yeah pretty chill just vegging out after work watching Hot Fuzz (great film). I was just testing out a new pedal that I just bought that makes my guitar sound like it’s from the 80’s, it’s like Robert Smith in a box haha.
HAPPY: We’re really loving Unconventional… could you tell us a little about the track?
KACPER: Thanks, I’m glad you’re digging it! Yeah it’s just a fun little surfy tune about a dude falling in love with a girl and discovering he has a few little kinks. I like to juxtapose a lot in regards to lyrics, melodies, and their interplay, and I wrote this one in the perspective of a really shy/coy person who has trouble expressing himself properly… kind of fumbling around and calling a hand job ‘doing the shaky shake,’ so you can really feel when the passion takes over him and he can’t help but debase himself and yell “put your hands around my fucking throat!”
HAPPY: How are you feeling about it now that it’s been out for a couple of weeks?
KACPER: Yeah really good. We’ve been getting loads of good feedback about it and it goes off at gigs! It’s one of my favourite songs to play as well, so I can’t see myself getting sick of it any time soon.
HAPPY: This was the first single you’ve released since you dropped Kids… do you feel approached the songwriting in this new song any differently?
KACPER: Yeah, definitely. On Kids I essentially wrote by myself when I first moved to Brisbane. For this track, Sam came in with a song and played the first few chords and we jumped over it with what the song actually ended up sounding like (sorry for usurping your song Sam!). So it was definitely a more collaborative effort, I think we all just vibed and meshed well with each other on this one because it was written in about 20 minutes.
HAPPY: You’ve got an EP coming out next month, right? What can we expect from the EP?
KACPER: Umm an instant classic? Nah it’s alright haha. It’s pretty varied hey, there’s a lot of unsuspecting twists and turns in it, right from the get go. The opening track is probably not something you’d expect coming from us if you were to measure your expectations by what we’ve already released. It’s a bit of a mixed bag and we’re really excited to share it with everyone. Hope you dig it!
HAPPY: We’re picking up a few different sounds in your music… are there any particular artists that have influenced your sound?
KACPER: Yeah you wouldn’t be wrong saying that! All of us are really eclectic in our music tastes, but all of our favourite genres seems to cross over. We all love Pixies, The Strokes, Interpol, FIDLAR, Dandy Warhols, Surf Curse, Growlers etc. There are too many bands to name here haha, but I guess we just try to blend all the sounds we love, and really try to stay clear of pigeon holding ourselves. We really have no time for restricting ourselves when writing music’s meant to liberating, you know?
HAPPY: We imagine seeing you live would be a pretty fun time… could you walk us through what one of your live shows looks like?
KACPER: Thanks, we always try to have a good time and give as much as we can to everyone who’s out there watching! It’ll always be high energy; when we start it’s pretty much full throttle until we stop and the rooms usually bouncing around a bit. Dan and I will usually mess with each other and banter on stage, sometimes I might spill a drink on him; it’s all about having fun and making everyone in the room feel comfortable because it’s much easier to have fun in the mosh if you see the band’s easy going and the members are genuinely happy to be there. You guys should come see us sometime!
HAPPY: What else is next for Hey Baby beyond the new EP? Any other exciting plans?
KACPER: Yeah for sure! We have loads of material so right now we’re just trying to fine tune everything before we jump back into recording another EP or even an album. We also have a bunch of shows lined up for next year but we’ll reveal all of that a bit later. More merch will be coming in soon as well so yeah, much more, we’ve just gotten started and we don’t plan on stopping, we just love everything about music way to much to slow down.
HAPPY: Cheers for the chat!
KACPER: Thanks heaps for having me!
