Imugi 이무기 deliver Greensmoke, their latest bout of hypnogogic transcendence

Hailing from New Zealand with roots in South Korea and Aotearoa, silky bedroom duo Imugi 이무기 create multifaceted R&B synth-pop that challenges the inherent notions of Eurocentricity in contemporary music.

The duo, made up of singer and songwriter Yery Cho and producer Carl Ruwhiu, have recently released their latest single Greensmoke, four-and-a-half minutes of pure nonchalance, impassivity and sensuality.

Greensmoke, the latest single from electronic bedroom duo Imugi 이무기, is a soulful blend of carefully curated R&B beats and poignant, affected lyricism.

The duo’s first EP Vacasian was, as the band describes, “a trip through the diasporic-Asian-girl-psyche and the healing it takes to go from self-consciousness and self-awareness”.

The band skilfully combines elements of R&B, synth-pop, funk and spoken word to embrace multiculturalism and explore multifaceted identities and complex issues faced by women of colour in contemporary music.

Greensmoke, Imugi 이무’기’s first single since their 2017 EP Vacasian, was released on January 18 and has already garnered considerable attention in the band’s native New Zealand.

The song’s accompanying clip, featuring the duo poolside, was directed by Connor Nestor, head of the Auckland-based A Label Called Success. Its visual are dream-like and playful, pertaining to some sort of contemporary Hockney-esque, Lars Von Trier aesthetic. Check it out above.
