Introducing: Dead Albatross

IS IT A BIRD? IS IT A PLANE? Nope, just a Dead Albatross hanging out in good ol’ Melbourne. If the futuristic mash of electronic and psychedelic rock doesn’t get your juices flowing, then I don’t know what does!

Dead Albatross

With no ancient mariner to be seen on deck, Dead Albatross takes the stage to exude their intoxicating synths and reverb tinged psych-rock!

This Melbourne-based four piece is the creative project of Adam Cupitt, Martin Tong, Christoph Walla and Brendan Taig, who say they are “Much more concerned with the anxiety and absurdity of modern existence” than living up to their death metal sounding band name. And it shows in their latest EP, Die Wunderbastards.

Since originally starting as a recording project in 2008, Dead Albatross has explored variations of texture and layering to develop their own individual sound. Their first EP in 2012 verged more into garage pop than their current psych-rock flavour but it’s a chaotic explosion of intricate synths and echoing reverb that stamps this band in Australia’s growing music scene. Flash forward to 2014 and we have Die Wunderbastards: a five track second EP with a much more refined but still highly experimental sound.

The EP is an accurate representation of the growth of this band over the years. Whilst songs vary from mellow psychedelic melodies to more upbeat rock rhythms, there are overarching themes of life and growing up that will resonate with people. It’s a refreshing change to hear lyrics about the band’s philosophical thoughts (see The Enthusiast – “We are the things that we like”), that nicely compliment the overall euphoric tone of the release.

The spontaneous nature of this band means that new tunes and concerts are often dropped sporadically but I guess that’s half the fun of being a fan, right? If you aren’t able to catch Dead Albatross live in Melbourne at some point, you can download their latest EP Die Wunderbastards on Bandcamp or triple J Unearthed.
