Eight months after the brutal deaths of his parents, Jake Reiner is trying to make sense of a reality that still feels impossible.
Especially as his younger brother faces murder charges in connection with their deaths.
Jake, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, has spoken publicly for the first time.
In an interview with KABC-TV’s Mark Cota-Robles, Jake reflected on his parents, and the passage of time since their deaths.
“It’s been 8 months. It feels like 8 years at the same time. And it also feels like 8 minutes,” he said. “Because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”
His parents were found dead on December 14, 2025.
Hours later, Jake’s younger brother Nick Reiner was arrested.
For Jake, the tragedy has meant confronting two losses at once: the deaths of his parents and the imprisonment of his brother.
“My parents had unconditional love for all three of us,” Jake said, reflecting on the family he grew up in.
That unconditional love makes the circumstances surrounding his parents’ deaths all the more difficult to process.
Jake acknowledged that Nick’s arrest has made an already unimaginable situation even more complicated.
“Yeah. I mean, he’s in jail, so …” he said, struggling to continue. “You know, it’s … I physically lost my parents. And then Nick was arrested. And now it’s me and Romy.”
There’s no neat way to describe that kind of grief. Eight months on, Jake isn’t presenting one.
Instead, his first interview captures the strange limbo of trying to mourn while a criminal case continues to unfold.
For Jake and Romy, the family they knew has been irrevocably changed.
And as Jake’s own words make painfully clear, waking up each morning means confronting that fact all over again.
