Its dreamy, sleepy, synth-laden magic, and its sexy and calming all at the same time. Welcome solo artist Jessy Lanza, the Canadian native from the small town of Hamilton, Ontario who’s new music has wound it’s way into our ears this week.
Lanza’s minimalistic style originated with her studies of jazz performance and piano, as well as a personal interest in electronic, r&b and hip hop. Her influences are varied, ranging from that of Def Wave and Heatmakerz to Melba Moore, all while taking on an eerie similarity to that of Jamie xx.
Fresh from a hugely successful stint at SXSW, as well as a signing with UK’s Hyperdub Records, is Jessy Lanza – Canada’s hip-hop princess (no sass included).
Lanza released her debut album, Pull My Hair Back in September 2013, after collaborating with Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys. Fresh from signing with UK electronic label Hyperdub, the album christened a flagship of what electronic pop should sound like, treading that fine line between cold futurism and the r&b that the duo are infatuated with.
The album has nine tracks and is beautifully executed electronic r&b, complete with stripped back vocals and smooth bass lines. The opening track Kathy Lee demonstrates easy listening and a flawless vocal synth combination. The work continues to evolve, with tracks Fuck Diamond and Against the Wall increasing in heat and intensity, demonstrating Lanza’s unique perspective on her genre of electronic music.
Lanza’s performance at South by Southwest earlier in the year has led to widespread recognition of her individual genre and her skill:
“What’s particularly impressive is that Lanza creates everything herself live: programming the drums, juggling various electronic gadgets and spinning around to add keyboard stabs whenever she’s got a free millisecond. In need of more hands, she tucks her microphone under her arm when it’s not required, occasionally pulling it out to add a snippet of breathy falsetto.” – The Guardian
Lanza has since been recruited by Cut Copy for their North American tour. When she’s not gallivanting around the United States, she works as a music teacher in her hometown. What a down to earth honey!
