Jimi The Kween heads straight for the dancefloor on Pretty Club Girl
Jimi The Kween has spent a good chunk of 2026 proving they can work just about any kind of room.
Fresh from Groovin The Moo and a Pride Month run through Los Angeles, Amsterdam, London and Berlin, Jimi is heading back into much sweatier territory with new single ‘Give It To Me’ — a dark, late-night club track arriving just ahead of two BIGSOUND showcases.
And, as it turns out, there’s plenty more where that came from.
The single also comes with news of Jimi’s debut mixtape, Pretty Club Girl, arriving September 25 through queer-led label POOF DOOF Records.
‘Give It To Me’ is very much the 5am end of Jimi The Kween’s world.
It’s heavy, sticky techno built for a room where nobody is particularly interested in going home yet — all pulsing synths, minimal vocals and the kind of tension that makes considerably more sense under a strobe light.
The track was written and recorded in London with Grammy-winning producer Henry Smithson, with the pair spending an afternoon in Shoreditch messing around with analogue synthesisers until things started getting suitably filthy.
As Jimi tells it, the creative brief arrived fairly quickly.
“I said ‘this makes me want to hook up in the darkroom at Poof Doof.’ Henry was like, ‘Sick. Write it. Let’s go.’”
A few days later, Jimi tested the track during a DJ set. The response apparently settled the matter.
“This is for the club rats,” they say.
It’s also a useful first look at what Pretty Club Girl appears to be doing.
Rather than locking into one version of dance music, Jimi is treating the mixtape as a tour through the different corners of their musical personality: pop bangers, techno, orchestral moments and something they describe wonderfully as “fluffy rug electro.”
The common thread is club culture itself.
“Jimi The Kween was born and lives in club culture so it only felt right to release a mixtape about who she is at her core, a Pretty Club Girl,” Jimi says.
There’s an assertiveness running through this era too — less asking permission, more knowing exactly who you are when you walk into the room.
That confidence has been building for a while. Between DJ sets, drag performance and increasingly big festival stages, Jimi has become one of those artists who can move between pop spectacle and a cramped dancefloor without either feeling like the side project.
BIGSOUND should offer both ends of that nicely.
Jimi The Kween plays Eclipse in Brisbane on Tuesday, September 1 at 9pm, before hitting The Brightside Outdoors on Thursday, September 3 at 8pm. Snow Machine Festival in Queenstown follows from September 8–13.
