Hailing from Brissy, the lads from Hound bring us a killer 80s psych pub rock fused jam Pasito. The tune is off their forthcoming EP Astronomical Unit and they’ll be heading out on tour in August, ready to kick off on the 11th with their mates from Summer Blood.
The fabled rank of pub classic is not one many reach but, Hound’s new track, Pasito could very well sit in that top tier of screamers and belters.
Rolling in endorsement and cred, Hound have previously supported Killing Joke, DZ Deathrays, Clowns and Green Buzzard and their last few singles have received much love from community radio and triple J. Especially for their track and vid, God Is Calling.
This release comes not long after their EP Mini Volume out just three months ago. Alas, the boys have a new tune and they are ready to set the soundtrack for your blissful journeys… (Maybe to a particular festival in Byron next weekend, yeah?).
Hound embodies that upbeat sound that just makes you wanna jump up, down and around. But this new one will swiftly have you nodding your head to the beat in the front seat, windows down, hair flying around in the force that is going 110 up the Pacific highway.
The opening guitar riffs lay down basecamp in regards to their solid harmony. Two electric guitars tinkle around one note in particular but, in combination with those crunch tones, they legitimately pull on your chest like a slingshot and shoot you into the full blow of it all.
The full blow being the drums, with full exertion on cymbals, some long-winded guitar power chords and one lovely xylophone that really opens it all up into that ‘blissful feeling’.
The vocals are woozy. Woozy meaning that they are so laid back and not overly expressive that it will lull you into a state of complete relaxation. The feel you get after having a few beers when you’re a bit tired. The result of this being, that Pasito is one of those songs you can really ruminate with.
The band have managed to find the balance between capturing the ears with some interesting stuff but giving enough room to move around in your own mind. Perfect for those long car rides on a summer road trip or, on the train trips to work that you spend thinking about that road trip.
What cranks it up the next level is the mega jam sesh at the back end of the track. The whole song works a bit like an escalator willing its way constantly to this final outcry. It all just comes together and what once, was just a tinkle of the lead guitar is now a scream that emulates the power of a good old pub classic.
One that would’ve had all our parents on their feet, dad-dancing and spilling their beers. However, cranking it up another notch and really delving into a Gilmour style solo would’ve given it an extra hit of that 80s nostalgia.
