Royston Vasie are four fine gentlemen from Melbourne who make some ear tingling garage rock. They describe their sound as a having a “sleazy rock vibe, but we like to keep it upbeat, bringing the energy with us as well”. Sweet. They draw inspiration from the likes of The Velvet Underground and the Dandy Warhols. Double sweet.
There’s a lot of variation from track to track; some, like Easier have a melancholy tinge, that makes you want to slump on your lounge, make a duvet cocoon, bury yourself into the music and not get up for three days (in a comfortable, cosy way). Others, like Wreck Your Health pack a real punch. It gives you that kind of energised feeling that would make you dance on a table in a bar. Or at least around the kitchen whilst making your breakfast. You’d feel badass, frying that egg.
No matter how you are feeling, these tracks will suck you right into their core; empathising with you, or rattling you about a little. Their recent album, Tanah Merah, released in June 2013 on Milk! Records does exactly this. It is diverse but nicely threaded together with riffs that incorporate guitar drones across the spectrum. This album is bold; with psychedelic elements, and some exhilarating post-punk sounds. It’s got attitude.
