Sports Coach is back on the court with The Ballads of Coach Lazy Eye

I don’t know exactly who Sports Coach is. I do know however that he just released a new album, The Ballads of Coach Lazy Eye. You can download it for free on his Bandcamp page. You should, its great. Sports Coach who also goes by the alias Coach T-bone said that he wrote The Ballads of Coach Lazy Eye whilst watching snow fall from his window in Boston. It’s an album that explores notions of meaninglessness in the everyday. The lyrics are simple but kind of hit you in the face with their hopeful nihilism.

Sports Coach

Get back in the game with Sports Coach, his new LP Ballads of Coach Lazy Eye see Coach T-Bone take an understated new direction with his music.

The Ballads of Coach Lazy Eye is a slight departure from Sports Coach’s last release Blood & Sweat & Tears & Victory, the strange whimsy is still there but the punky speed is gone. In its place are hazy lyrically focused songs that make you feel like you’re traveling backwards. The album opens with life is a joke and u r pointlessdon’t let this song inspire you, a song that sounds a bit like Beat Happening or a mellow incarnation of Pavement. The track involves Sports Coach talking to the spirits in his attic. They tell him that he should spend his time at the power lines in the woods near his house, and that if you can hear the electricity you will never be alone. The song is a quiet yet powerful exploration of isolation and melancholy perfectly illustrated by the lyrics, “I could never feel okay, you know I tried.” These lyrics are then backed with a sweet and slightly distorted guitar. This is the kind of song that you’ll want to listen to on repeat whilst you stare out the window.

no plan, no hope, no future, no chance, dying slowly, pain encloses on my essence, is another highlight and despite its title is one of the more upbeat songs on the album the guitars are energetic and the vocals are full of movement. One of the most interesting elements of The Ballads of Coach Lazy Eye, and the Sports Coach project in general, is the way it manages to combine humor and sadness. This song is a great example of that with lyrics such as, “The future said I got you, yeah man, yay.”

The standout track on the album for me is, trying 2 b me, trying 2 b free, you gotta let me fly, dont u evr ask me y, eagle head, dolphin soul, i always was made o’ gold. The song starts out with dizzy, space age synths before delving into lyrics such as “Something to remind me I’m alive again” and “Do your best, do better.” The song makes your body move whist lifting you up and making you want to try harder.

Sports Coach seems like the kind of guy who acts like he doesn’t care but actually does, probably more than most.
