Tems says Rihanna told her to “stop being so humble”

Tems declares Rihanna advised her to stop being so humble: “She was like, you need to be that bitch you know you are.”

Tems (aka Temilade Openiy) opened up about various aspects of her career during a recent interview for a GQ cover story. She discussed her “humble beginnings,” as well as what it was like to work with Drake and Beyoncé. Above all, a major highlight from the interview was Tems’ comments about global songstress, Rihanna.

According to the 27-year-old Nigerian artist, when the pair crossed paths at Rihanna’s 2021 Savage x Fenty show in Los Angeles, she advised Tems to stop being so humble: “I just have this chill thing going on,” she told GQ Magazine. “She was like, ‘You need to be that bitch you know you are.”

Since emerging onto the scene with her Billboard-charting 2020 collab, Essence with Wizkid, Grammy-nominated Tems has risen from strength to strength, garnering fans by the likes of SZA, Adele and Barack Obama. However, she tells GQ that accolades don’t mean everything to her: “Yes, these things add up to my career. But they’re not the core of my story.”

Last week, Tems shared the exciting news about her cover story with British GQ through Instagram, captioning the post, “Baby gyal for @britishgq.”
