The world is falling for Josh Cashman’s wholesome honesty. After hearing his new single Listening, you will too

Josh Cashman has come a long way from playing in Melbourne backyards in front of friends and family.

Having just finished an American tour with one of his mates Tash Sultana, Cashman is ready to release his latest single Listening.

Humble, harmonic and heartfelt to the core, it’s no surprise that Josh Cashman’s honest style is taking the world by storm.

The Australian singer-songwriter shot to fame after his song Patience was added to a viral US Spotify playlist last year. The exposure soon lead to being signed on American agency Paradigm (Coldplay, Boo Seeka) and acceptance into a SXSW showcase.

“Austin was incredible – it had that ‘Southern Charm’ everyone talks about”, Cashman said. He valued“being on the other side of the world making music and playing shows in places I’ve never even dreamed of visiting”.

“One of my favourite parts of the whole overseas trip was playing my first headline show at the Rockwood Music Hall. That was a bit of a pinch-me moment! And the bagels were pretty dope! I had never had one before!”

Although his success could seem to have occurred overnight, that’s hardly the case. Cashman was dedicated to music at an early age, having grown up in a house that would listen to music rather than watch TV. He decided to move to Melbourne from country Gippsland, turning his back on a promising football career to pursue his dream of playing music.

Melbourne was a mecca for connections and experience, cumulating in his collaboration with Melbourne-based producer Jan Skubiszewski (John Butler Trio, The Cat Empire) for his six track EP, coming out in July this year.

Cashman advised Jan is a genius, “and super humble by nature. Being creative with him was a breeze!”

Listening, the second single from his EP, is a heartfelt, focused, feel-good tune. Less synthetic than Patience and less rock-heavy than Wishful Imagery, Listening stages Cashman’s refined guitar skills and assured voice.

The electronic backdrop alongside quick, playful guitar delivers a soft but sturdy, harmonically rich tune that’s impossible to not bop along to.

“It was a lot of fun exploring a more electronic avenue with sounds. Every song on the EP contrasts, with this song being the most experimental”.

The highs and lows of the song perfectly showcase Cashman’s impressive vocal range. His voice reveals strength, determination and a calibre of control that cannot be taught. He has raw talent, something evident from his first utterance.

The film clip that accompanies Listening inserts a candid Cashman, warming up his vocals before a performance. The scope and ease which he yields is similar to that of Matt Corby; his voice has an edge and it’s a draw card.

Cashman’s smile reverberates off the screen; a testament to the love and enjoyment he finds within music. The film clip is a collection of footage taken while on tour in America, meeting fans and performing in a multitude of cities.

Cashman is surrounded by smiling faces; smiling with him, at him or because of him. His infectious and humble attitude is evident from his interactions with not only his friends, but his fans.

“It was pretty insane being on the other side of the world and have people singing your lyrics and knowing who you are. Each show had a very positive and super-responsive energy. I didn’t meet one dickhead the whole time!”

“I loved how enthusiastic the audiences were. On the Tash Sultana tour the room was full as soon as the doors opened. The crowds came out early and saw every bit of the show including the support act. That was a welcoming feeling”.

The single is deftly-produced, strikingly honest and endlessly playable. Mesmerising in sound, and enigmatic in performance, Cashman’s upcoming launches will surely sell out fast.
