Happy Playlist – Our Favourite Tracks of 2013

2013… What a year for Australia. Ups and downs, highs and lows, a few Friday the 13ths chucked into the mix, the rise of the Abbottoire, blazin’ springtime bushfires, Shane Warne’s face and Big Brother season one million. Despite all this crap, its been a cracker of a year for Australian music. Here are our (pleasantly varied) choices of the Top 5 Australian songs that have gotten us through 2013. The best of times, the blurst of times…

LULU

The Gooch Palms – You

Go back to school, ask your high school crush to prom, kick the balloons outta the way and slow dance to this little baby.

TV Colours – The Neighbourhood

This is the opening track to what very quickly became my favourite Australian album of 2013 – Purple Skies, Toxic River by TV Colours. The whole thing is fucking genius, an amazing contemporary revival of 80s punk. Listen to the guitar solo at 1:45.

Day Ravies – I Don’t Mind

Alex, I think you put it best: “A rare moment of lucid memory on the album, like seeing someone you knew from high school while tripping on peyote at the Benito Juárez International Airport departure lounge”.

Montero – Adriana

My favourite love song. “It’s about Baby John Burgess trying to express to Adriana that she should stay alive because people love her. It’s also about finding a romantic equal”.

White Lodge – Teenage Fever Dream

I don’t know what to do, I don’t know what to say – we never did that much talking anyway!

ALEX

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Eyes Like The Sky

Best Australian album of the year – hands down. Released back in Feb, hitting play on this bad boy is like stepping into a spaghetti western and having an acid fried John Wayne fire a fake six shooter at your brain.

Flyying Colours – WAVYGRAVY

Just about the coolest shit out – Flyying Colours had me hooked on this one song and followed up in November with their self titled EP. Did not disappoint.

The Dead Heads – I Don’t Care For That

Off their debut This Is Whats Happening In Sydney, my hat goes off to these guys for keeping the 3 guitar psych jam dream of the 1990’s alive.

Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys – Any Day Now

“When your girlfriend hates your guts and makes you feel this waaaaaaaaaaaay”
