Shows: Velvet Cave presents Animal Majik

For a couple of years now, Sydney’s least hygienic party venue Club 77 has been home to the city’s only regular 60’s psychedelia night. Don’t worry, this isn’t Twist and Shout (now defunct) where DJ’s spin Rhythm n’ Blues n’ Rock n’ Roll – The Velvet Cave is a night for the real freaks, rockers and acid casualties of the 21st Century. It’s a night that has consistently featured some of the best mind fucking psychedelic/blues/drone/gaze bands from here and interstate, previously showcasing The Laurels, The Otchkies and hosted the Dolly Rocker Movement‘s reunion show.

Tonight from 9pm, head down William St. to check out The Grand Rapids, a five piece that play droning rock & roll and who aren’t afraid of a little feedback. Check out the mutton chops on the vocalist in this video for their single Great Shakes. Playing beforehand are Sydneysiders Black Springs who are equally deserving of the late spot with their jangling brand of delay heavy space-pop. This isn’t a ‘headline – support’ relationship, both bands are as excellent as each other so be sure to get there by 10:30 in order to catch them both.

There’s more good news to come: entry is a mere $10 on the door (guarded appropriately by a curtain of rouge velvet) and the bar boasts $5.00 South American beers all night and $5.00 spirits until 11 pm. I dare you to find a better price at any live music venue in Sydney.

77’s is an underground club venue at number 77 William St., just up from Hyde Park on your way to Kings Cross. There’s no sign to tell you where it is, but if you follow the long haired freaks who look like characters from The Mighty Boosh you’ll find it without any worries. Crack out the doc martens and don’t bother washing your hair – I’ll see you there (and that’s not just a generic sign-off or call to action statement:  I am legitimately going to this one tonight and I am super pumped).
