Phil Ellison was born in Los Angeles, California in 1983. Now under the moniker Flying Lotus, he's a DJ, musician, record producer, filmmaker, rapper and founder of the record label Brainfeeder.
Flying Lotus has released six studio albums with 2010's Cosmogramma and 2014's You're Dead! receiving exceptionally high critical praise for their experimental jazz and hip hop confluence and forward thinking production. He has produced much of the transition music on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim program and raps under side project Captain Murphy.
Furthermore, Ellison's grandmother and grandfather are legendary jazz artists Alice and John Coltrane.
