Video Premiere: David M. Western’s “You Remind Me Of A Friend” a perfect drop of indie folk

“You Remind Me Of A Friend” is a pure drop of minimalist and down-to-earth indie folk at its best.

David M. Western is on the brink of unveiling his eagerly awaited sophomore album, “On, On & On.” Today, we’re excited to debut the single ‘You Remind Me Of A Friend’ along with its official visualizer.

In this track, David M. Western effortlessly captures his signature minimalist and down-to-earth indie folk style, infused with an unparalleled level of honesty that’s become his trademark.

‘You Remind Me Of A Friend’ stands out because of its raw, unfiltered authenticity that gently tugs at your heartstrings. It’s not just a song; it’s like having a heart-to-heart with an old pal.

The guitar work is sublime, the production is spot-on, and the drums march throughout the track, accompanying him on his lo-fi walk through the song, as though matching his thoughts.

David’s lyrics delve into the interconnectedness of life, exploring the highs and lows we all go through. Lines like “excuse me for staring, you remind me of a friend” resonate deeply, expressing a longing for the intangible, the love and connection we all yearn for but sometimes struggle to find, especially when navigating the complexities of love.

For the visualizer, David M. Western collaborated with director Rick Clifford (RCStills) to create something sentimental and simple. They opted for vintage Super 8 film footage to evoke a sense of nostalgia and intimacy, perfectly complementing the song’s minimalist sound. Just like the song, the visualizer lets the lyrics take center stage, inviting listeners to immerse themselves thoughtfully in both the music and the visuals.

Take a moment to enjoy the heartfelt visualizer for ‘You Remind Me Of A Friend,’  above and let David M. Western’s evocative music and thought-provoking lyrics guide you on a journey of introspection and emotion.

With the video clip, director Rick Clifford (RCStills) and I aimed for sentimentality and simplicity. We felt that by using old Super 8 film footage it would evoke a sense of familiarity and intimacy. I feel this reflects the song quite nicely – the production of the song has extremely sparse instrumentation, just a guitar, drums and vocals until quite literally the final ten seconds of the track. There’s no weight in this song beyond the words I sing, so we wanted the clip to hold that same space for the listener to be held visually while travelling mindfully and thoughtfully through the music and words.”

David M. Western’s forthcoming album, ‘On, On & On’ delves deep into the themes of youth, love, friendship, and adulthood.  And just like stumbling upon a hidden gem, or a cult classic, this is set to be the perfect soundtrack for your coming-of-age journey.

Drawing inspiration from musical legends like John Prine, Big Thief, Gillian Welch, and Daniel Romano, infusing the album with his dreams of a vibrant future and reflections on a life well-lived.

From indie-folk to alt-country, ‘On, On & On’ will no doubt solidify David M. Western‘s reputation’s as one of Australia’s most promising and innovative young songwriters.
