It’s Flynn Kiely’s freakshow and we’re all just dancing in it.
Sydney-based queer artist Flynn Kiely is back with his new single, ‘freakshow’.
The track is the first single from his yet-to-be-announced EP, and it takes the messy reality of closeted desire and turns it into something sharp, camp and made for the dancefloor.
‘freakshow’ is Flynn’s second single since coming out as queer, and he’s on a mission to create music that he wishes he had growing up. His sound gives a snapshot into the confusing reality of growing into your skin and finding a strutting confidence in yourself.
It’s a story that feels particularly familiar to queer communities, and Flynn isn’t afraid to turn those experiences into sharp pop anthems.
Growing up queer can be a hard world to navigate, and Flynn is taking those experiences and turning them into something loud, theatrical and a little bit messy. He’s telling a story that’s far too familiar in the community, but doing it with plenty of attitude.
The lyrics are blunt, with an edge of cynical humour that shines a spotlight on the tensions that grow when a closeted man has an affair with a gay man outside his heterosexual relationship.
It’s complicated and messy, so don’t be fooled into thinking this is a love song. You can hear the story unfolding through Flynn’s tone, building until the lyrics are dripping with attitude and a dark-pop sound.
In a press release, Flynn said, “‘freakshow’ isn’t about judgment. It’s about a story I hear all too often. It’s darker, it’s honest, and it’s the most authentic I’ve felt in my sound.”
Behind the lyrics is a vocal chop that is just as sharp as the vocals, paired with rock-inspired drums. With its club production style and camp flair, this track is just dying to be played under dancefloor strobelights.
There’s something wonderfully obnoxious about taking a story this messy and dressing it up for the club. I can already imagine ‘freakshow’ rattling around a dark dancefloor at 1am, when the strobes are going and everyone has temporarily forgotten who they came here with.
‘freakshow’ is Flynn diving deeper into the grunge-leaning alt-pop sound he’s been establishing since 2020. Previous releases from Flynn, including ‘OCCUPATION’ and ‘new era’, have each surpassed 10,000 streams, and ‘freakshow’ feels like a natural next step in that sound.
Flynn Kiely is the lovechild of glitter and mullets, and ‘freakshow’ is the next chapter in his infectious sound. He’s heading straight into edgy McBling territory, and the Sydney scene better be ready for it.
