On Thursday 27 May, Happy Mag presents darby’s Suburbia vinyl launch at Waywards, in the heart of Newtown.
Two things are unspoken but unanimous at the Happy office; a deep adoration for live music and for vinyl. Hyper-creative Newtown local, darby, is bringing both. To celebrate a pressing of her hypnotic, lo-fi album Suburbia, she’s putting on a show at the ever-popular Waywards.
Her visual storytelling and indie-folk charm are destined to make for a spiritual night of connection, gentle swaying, and oh-so-many hits in the feels.
When we interviewed darby, we learnt that the creation of Suburbia began in 2017, during her travels in Europe, penning “lots of poems and detailed writing of my experiences and observations of the cultures”.
These anecdotes became the lyrical groundwork for the sentient album, which manages to sound melancholy and confident simultaneously.
If you’re a fan of Julia Jacklin and Courtney Barnett, Suburbia (and the rest of darby’s catalogue) will definitely be a snug fit for your music rotation. It was only a matter of time before the carefully telling lyricism and bouncy electric guitar work of Suburbia would be treated to that sweet 7′ wax.
The 18+ vinyl launch event is kicking off at 8 pm, with TILDA and Pan-Pacific Grand Pix on supports. Listen to Suburbia below, and snatch up some tickets for you and your mates here.
