Just when we thought Kim Gordon was as badass as badass can get, she’s just revealed in an interview with The Guardian that she was once sent to “Disney jail” for smoking weed at Disneyland.
The Sonic Youth frontwoman divulged that before she became the quintessential cool girl, she was a typical Los Angeles teenager in the ’70s, listening to Joni Mitchell and getting herself into trouble.
Sonic Youth frontwoman Kim Gordon has revealed that she was once put in Disney jail for smoking weed at Disneyland. Legendary.
The LA-based musician revealed that she and a friend were smoking a spliff in a cave on Tom Sawyer’s pirate-themed island in Disneyland in the ’70s, when the on-site security guard caught them red-handed.
“They took us underground,” she recalled, to a place where she saw “Mickey Mouse with a walkie-talkie.” There, she had to put up with creepy comments from the officers, as they asked her “does your mother know you’re not wearing a bra?”
Gordon was then put in a holding cell overnight. She was studying political science at the time, and this experience gave her a flood of ideas. “I was writing this paper in my head about Disneyland and how fascist it was. It confirmed my beliefs about American consumerism.”
Now, at the age of 66, not much has changed. Her latest release, Air BnB, from her upcoming solo album Home Record, is an existential angst anthem that pokes fun at the gigging economy. Check out the new single below:
