Meet the designer giving new hip-hop records a retro vinyl makeover

Meet Patso Dimitrov, the artist giving new hip-hop LP covers an old school makeover.

Taking recent releases from some of the world’s biggest names in hip-hop, the Barcelona-based art director and graphic designer reimagines them in the style of classic soul, funk and jazz records. So far, he’s reworked albums from Kendrick Lamar, Kanye, Kehlani, Erykah Badu, Danny Brown amongst heaps of others.

Meet Patso Dimitrov, the artist giving new hip-hop LP covers a retro vinyl makeover inspired by soul, jazz and funk records from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Speaking with Crack Mag, Dimitrov explains his inspiration:

“The idea came to me very organically. I collect vinyl records myself and am a huge music fan period (not only hip-hop). Obviously I’ve been doing alternate artworks for a while now and have always liked to put my spin on things, but for the past few months I’ve been in the creative space of listening to a lot of funk and jazz from the 70s and 80s, and trying to put a more modern, more personal, spin to the visuals from that period of time.”

Dimitrov’ gift is in authenticity. His covers actually look like old school LPs – so much so that if you didn’t know the faces of the artists he reworks, you’d be forgiven for thinking they were plucked straight out of the dollar bin at your local record store.

Check out a selection of the pieces below, and head to Dimitrov’s website or Instagram for more.
