With an apparent preference for the petite, Miniatures return to the fold with a new mini EP. With a few short-format releases already under their tiny belt, the Melbourne trio have brewed up two new tunes to form the latest part of Everything Is Chemical’s Virtual 7” series.
Miniatures’ sound is a euphorically space-like powerhouse. Utterly breathtaking.
Miniatures impressed us last year with their bedroom-made DIS EP, which is still available on their Bandcamp page. Before that they released a self-titled EP in early 2012, the first showcase of whirling, blissful dream pop. After initially relocating from Christchurch and a few lineup changes, they now opt for a drum machine within the production. This change is evident on their Virtual 7” effort, the latest in the underground label’s bi-monthly exclusive release – number 73 in the series for those playing at home.
The first track Form Into Soft & Wild opens with typically dreamy and echoing guitars. The chords are joined at once by the extra crisp percussion and airy, hazy vocals. The guitars compound to a grungy distorted chorus, still drenched in reverb with a 90’s post-punk vibe. Whilst washed out, the punchy vocals present a poppy element, before it all fades out in a cloud of distortion.[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=2023407640 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small track=4145081851]
Second track Once Alive shows a step up in production and their love for ethereal electronics, given atmosphere with layers of whispers and echoes. Jangly guitars dance around a The Cure-like bass lines, with more uplifting instrumentation and melodic vocal hooks allowing the pop side to overtake the shoe gaze aspects they’re often identified with.
It seems that Miniatures have found their stride in both input and output, and are ready to take their dreamy soundscapes from their heads and beds and release them into the world. We can’t wait to see what the crew can do when they go massive with a full-length release.
