Surrender to the chase: Ojay deliver ‘Creep In The Night’

Western Australian pop-rockers Ojay continue to prove themselves off the back of a three year hiatus, with new single Creep In The Night

Formed in 2018, pop rock outfit Ojay are already two albums deep, with a fresh single to top off their recent comeback. After a three year hiatus, Ojay returned with their sophomore album The Ride, hitting the scene hard and fast.

Now the group offer Creep In The Night, a groove-filled pop rock track that highlights all the best of what Ojay has to propound.

Chunky bass lines and a thick rock beat line the bottom, glossy production and theatrical vocals coat the sides and a jovial yet sophisticated energy permeates the entirety of Creep In The Night.

Playful and enigmatic, Ojay present hook after hook throughout the four-minute piece, their whimsical attitude practically as tangible as the desire to dance.

With immense accessibility and open arms, Creep In The Night invites us to bask in the thrill of a scare, a perfectly suitable release for Halloween month.

A chorus that harkens back to the early days of Panic! At The Disco with its projected, charismatic and layered vocals as well as rhythmic tapping of keys and percussion to create a skeleton-like feel to the already ominous production.

Leaning more into the pop end of their claimed genre, Ojay successfully blend the tongue-in-cheek light-heartedness of the pop punk sector, while demonstrating their musical aptitude and songwriting chops simultaneously.

An eruptive guitar solo that follows the enchanting vocal melody is just what Creep In The Night calls for, a song so full of satisfying moments and movements that it feels almost like a collaborative experience just to listen along with Ojay, as they power through light-handed threats and warnings of said Creep.

The single is a humorous cautionary tale, one without stakes that allows listeners to fully surrender to the experience of being chased.

Ojay have clearly come back stronger and prepared to fight. Sometimes a hiatus is the best thing you can do, and Creep In The Night is living proof that slowing down and rearranging sometimes leads to a solidifying of self.
