PREMIERE: The 485s new EP Definition is irresistible hip-hop greatness

It was last month, with the release of their latest single Flava Wave, that we were first introduced to the dynamic hip-hop sounds of Sydney musical collective The 485s. The band craft music that feels simultaneously familiar and fresh; it’s grounded in old-school hip-hop, but reaches far wider.

Now, with the release of their new EP Definition, they continue to build themselves as one of Aussie music’s most exciting emerging acts. It should go without saying that we’re stoked to be premiering it for you today.

On their new EP Definition, Sydney hip-hop collective The 485s marry a variety of genres to craft something that feels equal parts nostalgic and fresh.

Throughout the new EP, The 485s glide through a deeply infectious blend of hip-hop, funk, and soul to deliver something uniquely their own. With rich, groove-laden instrumentation and energetic vocal hooks, Definition is brimming with genre-bending brilliance.

EP opener Mesmeralda is a danceable slice of slinky hip-hop, while Lovesick is an irresistibly sultry offering of retro synth-pop. Within the EP’s opening moments, the outfit immediately establish the versatility of their music—one moment you’ll be floating through woozy synth-lines, and the next you’ll be shaking your entire body to high-octane basslines and effortless lyrical flow.

The Prodigal Flow and Flava Wave are the EP’s two most fervent tracks, showcasing their impassioned lyricism. By the time the EP’s closing track Steady Cruisin’ reaches its conclusion, you’ll have been roped in completely by The 485s’ infectious sounds.

These are still relatively early days for this Sydney collective, but judging by the quality of everything we’ve heard so far, I think we can safely expect plenty more quality tunes from The 485s.

For now, do yourself a favour and listen to the new EP above.
