Scalper is Nadeem Shafi, born and raised in East London and currently residing in Auckland, NZ. His music is atomspheric and dark. This music makes me think of underbellys; parties down foggy back alleys in some industrial estate, that kind of thing.
The production is seamless and the lyrics haunting. His music delves into several genres; there’s hip hop here, but also some darker drum and bass influences. With it’s solid basslines, distorted sounds, samples, and layering, this guy’s sound reminds me of some of the darker Massive Attack tracks, and I adore Massive Attack, so this is a big compliment.
It’s deep and dark. Scalper’s new album, The Emperor’s Clothes, is out now.
