PREMIERE: Auckland hands us the single of the summer with Sneakers and Come Around Sundown

Out of Auckland, New Zealand comes Sneakers. Their latest single Come Around Sundown is just the ticket to this new sunny weather and the building anticipation for summer.

Harbouring one of the most banging saxophone solos we’ve heard in a long time, the track is simply bursting with funky vibes.

Sneakers’ Come Around Sundown is mellow and sassy, bringing that cheeky tone we have come to know and expect from our New Zealand-based brothers and sisters.

While the track was written and produced by Nick Raven and Chris Dent, the Sneakers family extends far beyond this. Having spent years writing and recording together in bedrooms, basements and parents houses, Sneakers’ sound is fine tuned and cohesive.

With the sax feature on Come Around Sundown delivered by the masterful Matt Bizzle and drums from Sean Patterson, the recording of this solid gold banger was most definitely a group effort. Mixed by Morgan Allen at Depot Sound, this single oozes sophistication and a classic direction.

Sneakers are bringing back wild and unrestricted funk, and we’re certainly not complaining. It’s a big song which the band themselves describe as a “rich palette of sonic and visual wonder”.

And it’s true, Come Around Sundown is a kaleidoscope of sounds. Borrowing from classic funk and disco, Raven’s production expertise brings the single into a contemporary relevance. It’s as throwback as it is fresh.

Come Around Sundown is gritty, filled with attitude and draws from that exciting underground period of jazz funk. Sneakers are a seriously tight act and this single is surely just the beginning.
