The ongoing Royal Commission into child sexual abuse at the hands of members of the Catholic Church has reached new heights of tensions following the news that Cardinal George Pell wouldn’t be returning to Australia to give evidence due to purported illness. Instead he will give evidence via video link while in Rome.
So leave it to comedy singer / songwriter Tim Minchin to express how we all feel about the matter in a hilarious song, where he calls the Cardinal amongst many other things ‘scum’.
Minchin posted the song to his Facebook page last night, with proceeds from the song purchased on iTunes funding a trip for Ballarat abuse survivors the chance to fly to Rome and be present when Cradinal Pell when he does give evidence to the Royal Commission. $80 000 dollars have already been raised.
Needless to say the song has split public opinion, with some supporting the satirical nature while other have called it an attack on the Cardinal. Let’s just call it as we see it, it’s rather brilliant.
