Do you know what providence means?
To the naked eye, it might seem like Matt Johnson & Jay McCarrol became cinema’s next hyperfixation overnight.
The two are unstoppable this year, almost like they’ve been blessed by providence; a divine protection, if you will.
If you’ve seen the list of upcoming projects attached to Matt Johnson’s name, then you already know how in-demand the Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie director is at the moment.
But this is no mere miracle, nor intervention of the divine. This is hard work that has paid off.
The two have come together to form Tony, an immersive, touching, and intimate experience of Anthony Bourdain’s early life.
Jay McCarrol’s soundtrack is cathartic to say the least, with creaky pianos providing atmosphere and vulnerability.
Whilst Matt Johnson follows a solid narrative that is as fun-to-watch as it is searingly brutal to witness at times.
The whole movie is supported by a dynamic cast that all seem perfect for their roles, initially I was skeptical of Dominic Sessa as a young Bourdain. But now, I couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role.
The film is truly in the spirit of Anthony Bourdain. Rest in peace.
