Twin Beasts have been working like a well-oiled machine lately. In the past year they’ve re-vamped their name (previously The Toot Toot Toots*), released their highly acclaimed 2014 LP Bad Love and even chatted to us about the usual muso business: inspirations, how they write songs and naked ladies.
Twin Beasts let loose once again on their new track Open Up Your Eyes. The first taste of their forthcoming EP.
Now the Melbourne five-piece are back with another powerful single which will appear on their forthcoming EP, slated for release later this year. Open Up Your Eyes is a far cry from the band’s previous work, opting for a fuzzy rock-based sound unlike their usual bluesy theatrical repertoire.
Although it still maintains some of the brilliant storytelling Twin Beasts are known for. The song follows the story of a persona who, to put it quite simply, is a complete bastard. He thinks he’s better than everyone else, tries to climb the social ladder by stepping over everyone, and doesn’t appreciate anything he has. Bastard. But this is where Twin Beasts show off their grit and strength, musically slapping this guy in the face while you revel in satisfaction.
Vocalist Danny Eucalyptus shows off his killer range with a few moments during the track where he just lets loose, yelling to the treetops “But everybody dies, so open up your eyes.” In between these moments there’s lots of jolting fragmented riffs, complimented with nicely mixed drums, and nuances of reverb. Technically the song sounds a little messy, but that’s the whole point. Open Up Your Eyes is raw and convincing. It isn’t meant to be the cleanest or most commercially appealing song to wrap your ears around. Open Up Your Eyes is a clever introduction to Twin Beasts’ upcoming release in the second half of 2015. So if this is just the first taste, we can safely say that the band’s follow up to Bad Love will definitely be one to keep an eye on this year.
Twin Beasts’ single Open Up Your Eyes is currently available on the group’s bandcamp page for the small sum of $999.95. Yes you read that right, $999.95. Enjoy selling your soul and eating nothing but cheap ramen for the next month to afford this one!
*Ed. Since the Toot Toot Toots is no longer in use as a band name if there are any aspiring musicians who want to form a Wiggles cover band, you can’t go wrong with a name like this.
