Surf rock two-piece Hockey Dad was formed in Windang, New South Wales and are keeping the art of the duo alive. With two studio albums and one EP to their name, Hockey Dad has gathered a generation of youth to the power of surf-rock with their themes of modern alienation and straight-up punch.
In 2013 Billy Fleming and Zach Stephenson joined forces after the dissolution of an earlier project titled Abstract Classic. The duo lives two doors down from each other on Boronia Street where they perfected their craft of the two-piece and still reside to this day.
They have cited '60s garage and '90s punk as major influences in developing their sound. They signed to Aussie independent label Farmer & the Owl in 2015 and their second album Blend Inn peaked at #6 on the ARIA charts.
Though it's quite an unusual name for a band, fans of The Simpsons might be able to spot the reference. Bart and Milhouse were playing a video game in an obscure scene from the long-running show. The games title? You guessed it, Hockey Dad.
The band's success over the release of three albums has been a phenomenon, especially in Australia, with their last two albums, Blend Inn and Brain Candy peaking in the local charts at position 6 and 2 respectively.
