5 artists from South Australia that we’re digging right now

It’s that time of year again. The time when we scour the depths of Australia and New Zealand to bring you some raw talent as part of our Needle in the Hay vinyl competition.

South Australia isn’t a state to be looked over when looking for the best new Australian music. They’ve shown us time and time again they’ve got the goods with acts like Paul Kelly, Sia, The Angels and Hilltop Hoods. Have a look at our more recent favourites from the wine state.

We’re looking all over Australia and New Zealand, giving one artist the chance to press their single to vinyl. Here are 5 artists from South Australia we’re digging.

West Thebarton

Epic seven piece West Thebarton have taken Australia by storm, transcending far beyond their pub rock roots. The raucous Adelaide band was nominated for an ARIA last year for their debut album Different Things Being Different.

Since then they’ve played a handful of international festivals such as Pukkelpop, Reading and Leeds. Their latest single Tops is stacked with powerful choruses and their signature gnarly guitar riffs. Take a listen below.

Bec Stevens

Bec Stevens has a celestial voice and her punk presence shines through her music. Steven’s songwriting takes you through her life by triggering your own memories in a seemingly unconscious way.

Eariler this year she released Why Don’t You Just, an EP filled with relatable tracks for when you just want to be understood.

TOWNS

TOWNS are bringing the tales of suburbia to the spotlight with poppy chords and their shining Australiana sound. The duo are tearing through the heavy Adelaide music scene with a hefty serving of ’90s pop rock influence.

Their EP Television was released last year and they’ve been non-stop since, and they’re currently on the road with Dear Seattle.  Take a listen to their head-banger of a release Safe to Say.

WING DEFENCE

Pop-punk revivalists WING DEFENCE will have you singing along without realising you even knew the words. They’ve only released three songs so far but they’re back-to-front with catchy riffs and heavenly harmonies.

The Adelaide pair exploded onto the scene with their debut single Stuck in 2018, going on to win Laneway’s triple j Unearthed competition earlier this year. This band is definitely one to keep an eye on. If you like Ruby Fields, WING DEFENCE will be right up your alley.

Beau Lightning

Beau Lightning is one of Adelaide’s most exciting newcomers with his blaring, psych-tinged alt rock. The 22-year old’s roaring vocals and intense energy make him a must-see on the live stage.

He draws inspiration from a Californian haze filled with desert and cowboys, setting himself apart with his enigmatic persona. He’s set to release another single later this year followed by an EP in 2020. Expect to see a lot more of the exciting Beau Lightning.
