We are absolutely stoked to announce that Needle In The Hay, our very own vinyl comp, is now open to New Zealand!
Now your favourite bands from New Zealand can win a 12″ vinyl pressing from Zenith Records and a slew of other prizes from Audio-Technica, JBL and Enmore Audio with Needle in the Hay.
Needle In The Hay is our biggest competition yet, aimed at championing emerging artists doing awesome things. We’re giving one band or solo artist the chance to win a huge 12″ vinyl pressing pack from the legends at Zenith Records.
The competition is open to every artist in Australia and now, New Zealand. Simply submit your EP or LP – either released or unreleased – along with your band or project name and the $5 entry fee to go in the running to win a 250 x vinyl pressing, plus a slew of other sweet prizes from Audio-Technica, JBL and Enmore Audio.
The Happy team will listen to each and every submission and decide on 10 finalists.
From the 10 finalists, the Happy team, alongside three guest judges, Jake Stone (Bluejuice) Magoo (producer, Regurgitator, Midnight Oil) and Julia Wilson (Rice Is Nice) will choose the winners and runners-up.
Entries for 2017 are now open and will close on August 1st. Finalists will be announced will be announced August 8th.
The winners will be announced on August 15th. We will also be putting on a party to celebrate in September with some help from our mates at Young Henrys!

The prizes:
• 1st Place: Pressed Vinyl – 250 copies of your EP or album pressed at Zenith Records with full colour packaging worth $3000.
• 2nd Place: Studio Microphone – An AT4050 URUSHI Mic from Audio-Technica worth $2000.
• 3rd Place: Speaker Pack – 2x JBL Wireless Speaker & Headphone packs $700 each.
• There will also be 7 X Runner Up Prizes of Single Mastering Packages from Enmore Audio, worth $200 each. NITH finalists will also develop a relationship with Happy Mag and will be featured on the site.
The intent of Needle In The Hay competition is to foster greater awareness of upcoming artists, and offer them the opportunity to release their music on vinyl.
We are always look for new ways to support emerging new Aussie music and hopefully to play a part of developing the careers of these artists, shining a light on the next wave of emerging talent.

JAKE STONE
Jake Stone is the former frontman of beloved Aussie band, Bluejuice. He is also a DJ, radio broadcaster and freelance journalist who’s been published in the likes of The Brag, Rolling Stone, Junkee, SMH Metro and right here on Happy Mag. Jake launched his solo musical career in 2017.
JULIA WILSON
Julia Wilson is behind Rice Is Nice, one of Australia’s most esteemed indie labels who’ve put out records from a slew of beloved Aussie artists over the past 10 years, including Straight Arrows, The Laurels, Seekae, and Summer Flake.
MAGOO
Magoo – a.k.a Lachlan Goold – is a multi award-winning Aussie producer. He is revered for his work on Regurgitator’s 1998 classic, Unit, as well records with Midnight Oil, Gerling, Powderfinger and countless local Australian acts since. He currently works out of his Brisbane studio, Black Box Recording.
