On his newest single 21&19, Harts has proved he’s not afraid to rock the boat a little. It’s a different side of him to be sure, but that attraction hasn’t gone anywhere.
The funk is strong with Harts on 21&19, a throwback to his early work and undeniably one of his stronger callbacks to the mentorship of Prince.
Where previous single Ain’t Nothing On Me was overflowing with self-assured energy, 21&19 dials the BPM down a notch in favour of a swinging, lowriding beat that rules the song from deep below.
Trademark guitar injections are spikes of electricity in the otherwise sultry track. Overall it’s hypnotic, alluring and deeply engrained with Harts’ funk heritage. Suss it out for yourself below.
“21&19 is a song written about regret and self awareness,” Harts shared. “A bad memory or time period in your life that you want to let go. The tune and melody brings back nostalgia for me as the music was written around the 2013/2014 Offtime/Daydreamer album period.”
“At the time I didn’t complete the song, not knowing where to take it or what to make of it. I revisited the track last year and completed the lyrics. Because of that, I feel it’s a cool mix of old school Harts and the new direction.”
Harts recently ripped up two separate performances at Bluesfest 2018 to heavy crowds, earning a few new fans along the way to be sure. On the live show horizon, you can catch Darren at Sea ‘n’ Sound Festival this June:
