There’s been a lot happening in the Kingston County camp. Immediately following the release of their first EP last year, the band took some time to reflect on their sound.
The Sydney seven-piece rented a house in Bulahdelah on NSW’s North Coast, and decided that their next release would be entirely self-produced. Now, the band have shared their single Something Better… and we’re completely hooked.
On their immersive and near-flawless new single Something Better, Sydney seven-piece Kingston County prove that sometimes it’s better to just do it yourself.
On the new single, Kingston County glide through a woozy melting pot of indie-rock, soul, R&B, and electronic to craft a shimmering sound that belongs entirely to themselves.
With glassy production and soulful, resonant vocals, this new track adds layer upon layer of immersive sounds, until it builds into a rich catharsis of horns and slick beats.
“We wanted to go away and write a song that wasn’t specifically a love story but represented an oppression of expectation from whoever, whether that be your girlfriend, parents or society,” the band say of the track.
“It comes from a place of feeling helpless to effect change in your life as I feel it’s easy to feel disenchanted and accept the status quo, this can be a slippery slope to a pretty dark place.”
Do yourself a favour and listen to the new track above, and catch Kingston County live at their single launch tonight (September 13th) at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory. More info here.
