After more than 20 years off the stage, Bikini Kill are bringing their messages of female empowerment back to the stage with a string of US shows in 2019.
This announcement comes shortly after their surprise performance last weekend at Pitchfork editor Jen Pelly’s book launch.
Feminist punk and riot grrrl instigators Bikini Kill have announced a string of US shows following their surprise reunion performance last weekend.
The three appearances will be the band’s first major shows since calling it quits in 1997, and we’re itching to see how their live show has changed since then. Famous for protesting “beergutboyrock”, Bikini Kill used not only their songs but the way they conducted their shows to further their message.
The classic Bikini Kill shows encouraged women to come to the front with men to hang at the back, and worked towards creating a feminist underground punk scene.
Fans noticed the absence of guitarist Billy Karen during the Pitchfork performance last week and it seems the original band member won’t be returning for the reunion, as announced this morning on the band’s website.
Nevertheless, we’re extremely excited to see the feminist punk band back at a time that couldn’t be more relevant! With all of the industry assault accusations lately, the #MeToo movement and the start of fourth-wave feminism, we need more bands like Bikini Kill to be advocating female voices being heard and fighting for ownership of their bodies.
Tickets to the US shows go on sale Friday Jan 18th.
