In a recent interview, Paul McCartney has called for the ban of Chinese wet markets, calling them “medieval”.
A widely held theory posits that Wuhan’s wet animal market was the origin of the coronavirus pandemic, with pangolins possibly acting as the intermediary host animal between bats and humans. The pandemic has killed about 80,000 people so far.
Musical legend Paul McCartney has called for the ban of Chinese wet markets, believing them to be the source of the coronavirus pandemic.
In an interview with US radio host Howard Stern, McCartney described: “I really hope that this will mean the Chinese government says, ‘OK guys, we have really got to get super hygienic around here.’ Let’s face it, it is a little bit medieval eating bats.”
“It seems like Sars, avian flu, all sorts of other stuff that has afflicted us… and what’s it for?” he continued. “For these quite medieval practices. They need to clean up their act. This may lead to [change]. If this doesn’t, I don’t know what will.”
McCartney himself is a vegetarian and animal rights activist.
“I understand that part of it is going to be: people have done it for ever, this is the way we do things. But they did slavery forever, too. You’ve got to change things at some point,” he argued.
“They might as well be letting off atomic bombs. It’s affecting the whole world.”
The wet markets sell fresh meat and sometimes live animals. However, the popular theory that the virus originated at Wuhan’s wet market currently remains unconfirmed, with new reports suggesting that the virus may have been around well before the cluster of cases linked to the market were reported.
