Lady Gaga’s One World: Together At Home benefit kicked off over the weekend, featuring over 60 artists from across the globe, to celebrate and raise funds for frontline healthcare workers.
The benefit was run in collaboration with Global Citizen and the World Health Organisation (WHO), raising nearly $128 million in donations for the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the WHO, powered by the UN Foundation.
Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Billie Eilish, and more came together on the weekend for WHO and Global Citizen’s COVID-19 benefit.
Highlights from the stacked 8-hour show included Paul McCartney‘s impassioned rendition of Beatles classic Lady Madonna, The Rolling Stones‘ virtual performance of You Can’t Always Get What You Want, and Stevie Wonder‘s moving performance of his late friend Bill Withers‘ Lean On Me.
“I’m very honoured to be part of this programme tonight that celebrates the true heroes: our health care workers all around the world,” McCartney told audiences before his performance.
“As this COVID-19 pandemic is a global crisis, we all have to come together to fight it on a global scale. Let’s tell our leaders we need them to strengthen the health care systems all around the world so that a crisis like this never happens again.”
“My mother Mary was a nurse and midwife just after and during the second World War, so I have a lot of time for the doctors, the nurses and all the medical staff that keep us healthy,” he concluded. “We love you, thank you.”
Aussies Delta Goodrem and Keith Urban also joined the lineup, with Delta’s performance of Together We Are One captivating global audiences. The Together At Home initiative follows on from a long line of virtual gigs and festivals held during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our homegrown Isol-Aid festival was a pioneer in this movement and has inspired countless similar project around the globe.
