Alice Ivy has shared the latest taste of her forthcoming album, today (March 8) enlisting Låpsley for the new single Popstar.
An expert blend of acoustic and produced elements, the single diverges from the pair’s electronic prowess to lean into a heavier alt-rock aesthetic.
While it’s title might suggest otherwise, Popstar is a gritty, hard-hitting cut, brimming with garage percussion and distorted guitar riffs.
For her part, London-based songwriter and producer Låpsley joins Ivy in an empowering message of solidarity, with lyrics informed by the duo’s experience navigating the music industry as young women.
Popstar makes mention of misogyny and ageism to deliver an ultimate note of triumph, as Ivy and Låpsley are on a mission to “break the bulletproof glass ceiling.”
Popstar arose while Ivy was performing shows in the UK, and linked with Låpsley for what she thought would be an electronic collaboration.
“For one reason or another we cranked out a massive angsty rock song,” Ivy recalled in a press statement. “I guess we were both just feeling super empowered in the moment.”
Popstar is the newest preview of Ivy’s forthcoming album, Do What Makes You Happy. Set for release later this year, it marks Ivy’s third studio album and will feature the previously released singles Wildlife, Howlin’ At The Moon and Broke My Heart.
Alongside Låpsley, the album features a starry list of collaborators like Mallrat, Jelani Blackman and Mayer Hawthorne.
