“This song makes you feel like you’re floating,” Alice Ivy said of her heavenly new collaborative single Broke My Heart.
Alice Ivy has tapped Mallrat and Jelani Blackman for the blissful, rap-infused new single Broke My Heart. Under Ivy’s ever-enrapturing production, Mallrat brings a heavenly dream-pop vibe to Broke My Heart, as punctuated by ear-catching flairs like twinkling harp strings and layered backing harmonies.
Elsewhere injecting elements of trap-leaning R&b and soul, Ivy once again showcases her ability to curate a distinct sonic energy that makes her at home in any genre of her choosing.
For his part, UK grime artist Blackman brings speedy cadences and an incisive pen game, delivering quips like “we were the perfect collab/ Like Bobby and Whitney.”
Lyrically, Broke My Heart sees the trio question the demise of a former flame, with mentions of a rekindled romance that arrived “too late.”
While it’s an all-too-common tale of heartache, the surrounding production is so heavenly — and Mallrat’s vocals so divine — that you’ll hardly be reaching for the tissue box.

Broke My Heart was initially shelved by Ivy following its initial version with Mallrat, but later came to fruition once the producer saw Blackman at a show in the UK.
“I went up to him afterwards and floated the idea of working on something,” Ivy explained in a press statement.“I sent him the demo with Mallrat and asked if he wanted to put a verse on it and he absolutely nailed it!”
In her own statement, Mallrat described Ivy as “one of my favourite collaborators,” and said Broke My Heart “came together really naturally.”

Ivy and Mallrat have collaborated before, with the producer lending her hand to two tracks on Mallrat’s debut album, titled Teeth and Butterfly Blue.
The latter served as the title track of Mallrat’s 2022 full-length, which featured among Happy Mag’s best Australian albums of the year.
Broke My Heart is the second single to be lifted from Ivy’s forthcoming third studio album Do What Makes You Happy, with the first — titled Howlin’ At The New Moon and featuring Mayer Hawthorne — arriving in June.
Upon its release, Do What Makes You Happy will serve as the follow-up to Ivy’s 2020 sophomore effort Don’t Sleep.
