All Her Years keep love in their hearts on new single ‘What A Lady’

All Her Years have looked at the glass half-full on What A Lady, the first taste of their upcoming EP.

All Her Years have vowed to keep love in their hearts on What A Lady, a joyous indie-rock cut that serves as the Sydney band’s latest single.

In what remains a throughline for the entire runtime, the track opens with an ascendant trumpet melody, setting the stage for a jubilant tune also carried by rhythmic percussion and soft fuzz rock strings.

There’s a carefree energy that courses through What A Lady, with verses that make use of sparse yet engaging instrumentation.

Save for the subtle twang of a guitar riff and the quiet crunch of snares, these moments rightfully spotlight the vocal performance. The rustic timbre and almost-talky delivery afford the single an intimate quality, helped along by a unique drawl.

The charismatic vocals prove to be an instrument all unto themselves, flitting between hushed whispers and more guttural moments with finesse.

While the intimacy of What A Lady delivers the equivalent of a folksy lulling daydream, that’s not to say the single is devoid of noisier elements.

On the chorus, the band’s collective efforts culminate in a triumphant collision of euphoric brass and thunderous drum rolls, making What A Lady feel both jazzy and carefree as well as commanding and intentional.

It’s a tricky line to toe, but All Her Years pull off the sound-juggling without feeling like a mish-mash. Equally as gleeful as the production is the storytelling.

Here, All Her Years explore the uncertainties of life, and the choice to revel in love in the face of them. “Violence is nothing but violent,” they sing as part of a catchy choral refrain, before sketching a portrait of someone who chooses not to “trifle in the depths of burden.”

It’s a message of optimism that feels particularly poignant, with the single’s accompanying tune serving as a reminder that when all else fails, at least we can still dance.

“The song is meant to serve as a notion that one should hold love in their heart even when surrounded by uncertainty,” All Her Years explained in a press statement.

What A Lady is the first single lifted from All Her Years’ upcoming EP Puma Night, which is set for release in January of next year – presave here.
